Founded in 1985, the Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2025. We took this as an opportunity to launch a new institutional model.
Our idea is simple: the foyer of the Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen should not only serve as an entrance and reception area for the institution, but also function as a forum, meeting place and event venue – for associations, cultural workers, gastro pop-ups, symposia, workshops and more. We aim to provide the necessary infrastructure and expertise to establish a new model for an art institution: one that is not only a producer and presenter of artworks, but also a host, facilitator and connector.
To realise this idea, the foyer needs to be redesigned. The key focus areas of the transformation are:
• Barrier-free accessibility
• Self-sufficient infrastructure designed for autonomous use
• Relocation of the office area
• Inspiring interior design
The new foyer is a step into the future. We aim to become a tangible place of participation – innovative, inclusive, and rooted in solidarity. The Kunst Halle will evolve into a new kind of open cultural hub for the city and region, with an expanded programme and more opportunities for our association members, the public and new friends to come together.
With the transformation of the foyer, we are aiming to achieve the following improvements:
• Implementation of an institutional model of participation and solidarity – cultural infrastructure for all those who do not have a space of their own
• Conversion of the foyer into a meeting, event and networking space for the city and region – a venue for innovative cultural offerings and new participatory formats
• Creation of synergies through collaboration with cultural stakeholders in the city and region (e.g. Literaturhaus St. Gallen, Architektur Forum Ostschweiz, municipal exhibitions)
• Modern and professional infrastructure for the institution and the public
• Creation of diverse and accessible entry points to art and culture, as well as improved conditions for art education
• Implementation of accessibility measures (removal of thresholds and installation of an accessible toilet)
Help us bring this idea to life!
The transformation project is being carried out by Lütjens Padmanabhan Architekt*innen, Zurich. In addition to the mentioned infrastructural renovations, the design focus is on simple interventions with a major impact. Parts of the original industrial architecture will be exposed and a large mirrored wall will be installed, transforming the foyer into a stage for St.Gallen’s cultural life and a festive meeting place. The refurbishment is scheduled for autumn 2026.
The Architektur Forum Ostschweiz, the Literaturhaus St. Gallen and the Städtische Ausstellungen are already among our established partners. In addition to these, collaborating associations and cultural practitioners can use the foyer for public events. It is also possible to rent the space for private functions. Please feel free to get in touch!
To bring our vision to life and carry out the refurbishment, we need the help and support of many people and sponsors. The budget for the planned refurbishment of the foyer and its infrastructure amount to around CHF 680,000. Support for the project has already been pledged by the St. Gallen Cantonal Lottery Fund, the City of St.Gallen, several foundations and private individuals. You too can support this forward-looking project and become part of our community – every contribution counts.
