Since the early eighties, the Zurich-based artist has become known primarily for his paintings and installation works. The exhibition at Kunsthalle St.Gallen bears the meaningful title «Das ganze Leben» (engl. «The Whole of Life») and focuses exclusively on Müllenbach's drawings, which, in this form, is being presented for the first time in a comprehensive solo exhibition in Switzerland. The works are based on photographic research and show spatial constellations in a hospital. The first thought of a simple drawing, determined by playful lightness, quickly gives way to a different perspective when one sees the works in context: Elements from the everyday world of things emerge in shadowy form, creating an image of reality in which objects conquer space like vectors. Müllenbach contrasts the reduction of the lines and strokes with an almost disarming directness when he does not shy away from telling stories with the simple things of everyday life and extracting connections.
