In the group of works entitled «Bilderstreit» (engl. «Image Controversy»), Silvie and Chérif Defraoui on the one hand take up the theme of the historical iconoclastic controversy, and on the other hand express the problematic of an artistic work in which two personalities with different approaches, languages and cultural origins join forces to reflect together on the meaning of the image. In the 'places of memory' (loci memorandi), the mnemonic technique developed by the ancient doctrine of rhetoric, the Defraouis found the possibility of uniting these two opposites. This technique for practising memory is based on the theory that the sense of sight is more developed than our other senses and that certain places and images evoke associations that activate our memory.
