Sibony’s sculptures and installations feature a filigree aesthetics that is characterized by a sensual use of materials and forms. Cardboard, wood, carpets, plastic sheaths or latex paint are by multi-levelled shifting processes embedded into the exhibition room’s architectural situation. The interaction of these „materials without qualities“ results in fragile arrangements featuring very much its particular tactile properties.
Sibony’s „spatial collages“ oscillate between object-like appearance and installative ensembles. One can well describe them as low-key art that excels/culminates however also in spectacular clous. As a result of the securing of evidence, the minimal dislocations and the sensorial moments, a novel constitution of space is articulated. Yet, Sibony avoids to predefine statements or to offer a simplified reading of the exposed work. Rather, by the combination of materials and the syntactic markers, equivocalities are provoked that are beyond the possibility of verbalisation.
«If Surrounded by Foxes» is not to be comprehended as an artistic attitude or gesture in respect to space. In fact, Sibony’s work much more formulates gaps and distensions, very much tending to perplexity and mystification. In the tilting point that is partly excited by the formal clarity and at the same time the uncertainty of the viewer’s standpoint, rests Sibony’s strength. He succeeds in making visible the lability of any equilibrium – and to even magically retain it. A catalogue is published accompanying the exhibition in collaboration with FRAC Champagne Ardenne, Reims (F), whereto the show will journey on in 2008.
